Marvel 2018 first Quarter

I has taken me some time to get this done as comics have been less than inspiring except for the return of the Hulk in No Surrender and the news that Sentry is getting his own book again.  So here is a look at some of the books from the first quarter. Marvel is beginning to do a lot better in 2018, here is a look at some titles of not mostly for better the worst one was ...Black Panther 169

Complaints about the legacy numbering systems is it shows white character like Captain America are at 697 issues where Black Panther is at 169, well when you are a supporting character in your own book it probably means you are a better supporting character than a lead, which is why his movie doesn't bode well. He started as a supporting character in Fantastic Four. The 169th issue finds the focus on his two lesbian body guards. He gets one panel and yet another comic where the cover has nothing to do with what is inside. If you were to spend 3.00 on this in a comic book store you should be pissed.

Captain Marvel 168

This was almost as bad as Black Panther, space opera that was a jumble, we had Sasquatch shooting guns like Chewbacca. The Alpha Flight is getting butchered as her side kicks. Carol is lost and this book lacks direction.

All New Wolverine 30

The common theme is too many guest stars are crammed into each issue. I hate the way Laura is being drawn.Hopefully this arc is over and the book will get better, as long as they switch artists.

Phoenix Ressurection

Forced to choose between this and the Jean Grey book I chose this one as two books re out of hand. She says good by to the Phoenix force, guess we will see where this goes for better or worse.

Amazing Spider Man - 794

It wasn't the worst issue but Scorpio from the Zodiac is kind of a lame villain. I know Bobbi is Peter's girl friend , but tired of her tagging along all the time. It looks like Norman Osborn is going to become Carnage, well they have had worse ideas and he has already worn an Iron-man suit so we know he likes to play dress up.

the Incredible Hulk 712

The worst Thor vs Hulk ever. The way it was drawn sucked. They were throwing punches behind one another, it was framed in a way that did not make sense. Who ever drew this had never seen a fight before in real life. Story wise well Cho proves he is a pussy by not letting go and letting a Hulk be a Hulk.

Avengers 677

This whole No Surrender story seems like a variation of the original Secret Wars, but on Earth with the Grandmaster taking the Beyonder's role. This issue mainly focuses on Quick Sliver with, Living Lighting, Scarlet Witch and Human Torch as support though the others are in the mix. They throw down with the Black Order which is clearly getting you more familiar with them for the movies to come.

Marvel Two In One 2

I like the fact this book is continuing the story of the Fantastic Four who despite the terrible movies that have been made you feel like you don't realize how much you will miss them til they are gone. With Mole Man and Doom in tow all that is missing is Reed and Sue.

The Falcon 4

The 4th issue of Falcon was better than expected, but he is another hero about to be crowded out by his supporting cast, I love Son of Satan, but if you already had Brother Voodoo then it's getting crowded, Marvel in trying to be PC, inadvertently is racist by assuming if a character is black he knows all other black people and has them on speed dial, just because Brother Voodoo works with one sect of Avengers doesn't mean he is tight with Sam. In fact this was more up Hellstorm's alley so why is Jericho in it at all?


Iron-Man 595

Was not as bad as Black Panther, but wasn't good. The art was better than Black Panther's though. It is basically Marvel trying to undo messes they have made.


Captain America 697

I didn't care for the art , but damn it was well written. Throws in Kraven a the Spider-man villain, which is always a nice touch to see one hero fight another hero's villain. It was done in a way that makes sense in the context of the larger story they are trying to tell here and puts Captain America back where he needs to be.

X-men Blue 20 / X-men Blue Annual 1

Issue 20 finds the stuck in the mess that is time colliding with different dimensions and is a mess. The annual find them trying to rescue the Starjammers from a symbiotic planet but first they fight Venom, Jean takes care of him, though Angel, Ice-man and Beast don't do as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy 150

Adam Warlock is back, the way he is handled makes me think the writer read to much Sand-man , but we shall see, otherwise it's a pretty decent lead in to the next Infinity Event, I am still not totally sold on Ant-man being on board, but this is better than most of I have read from this book recently so I called call it an improvement.

Spider-Man 236

I don't hate Miles. This was not one of his best stories he is in the 616 universe and trying to bolster him by giving him variations of Spider-Man villains with a few real ones thrown in is not doing him any favors. Why can't he have his own bad guys? The whole dad thing, seems a little tired and super -retconned.

Was Infinity Worth it ?

While the final issue was a lot of fun. Hulk did some smashing and Thor got have at them, was it worth all the tie-ins and the six issues it took to get there? If the big take away from this, that was the ramifications this was hyped to have in the Marvel Universe,  is now In-humans are going to pop up on earth.I think that was a pretty overblown lead in. If you look at the golden age of comic or even the best decade for comics the 8o's we would have gotten a lot more in a lot less time.

It all came down to a show down with the Avengers vs Thanos. One of the classic comic book writers could have pulled this together in three issues at most, two would have been pretty concise. So every thing else was long winded marketing.

This was no Secret Wars, which as simplistic as the off world Contest of Champions was, still was better written than this year's supposedly big event. With secret wars we got the symbiotic suit, Hulk going mindless, Thing staying on another planet and She-Hulk going the Fantastic Four, a new Spider-Woman, Titania and Wasp beating the X-men all by herself.

One thing it did accomplish taking Marvels end game in mind is it set the stage for the inter galactic universe and put it the spotlight, so they can continue to set up Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket Raccoon and friends did appear but did not have as major of a role as you would think they would.But of all the big events this one has to be the most disappointing and was not as much fun as Avengers vs X-men, Siege or WWH.    

Thor 2 the Dark World

There's good news and there is bad news to this one. First off , its better than first movie, if for no other reason than the fact , Thor has his powers the entire time. The movie is much more action, based it goes into at least three of the 9 realms , not all of them like the promo interviews claimed and if a fun watch. 

Hemworth is starting to get the character and fill out into his role, though often rather than being a quiet stoic of few words, he offers up his little inspirational good guy speeches. Granted the character has been written a few different ways in the past, but a love for Jane Foster as his motivation for not ruling up in Asgard, isn't cutting it. 

The big elephant in the room is the lack of god, power and the cinematic version not , following the mythos or mythology close enough. At one point Odin tells Loki, they are not gods, to they live and die, Loki retorts by saying they do live give or take 5000 years more than humans. So Asgardians are in aliens who live 5000 years longer than humans, are good with majick , but no different other wise. Wrong, this is not how they are depicted in the comic book. 

There are 750000, pagans in the U.S alone, so you are telling all of us , that our gods are not gods , I find this offensive, it nagged at me through out the entire movie, so the sequences that jolted me out of this resentment were obviously good enough to do that. If Disney is the reason behind this you would think, they would be o.k with having Hercules be related to gods as he was depicted  in the cartoon version, then Thor would be no different, why the change of heart? 

It effects the movie as a whole because Asgard then becomes this science fiction planet like Krypton was depicted in Man of Steel , and we have laser cannons and rocket boat, not to mention elves in space ships which is like something from Santa Claus vs the Aliens. Another big no no, is Freya dies and gets sent off on the funeral pyre, and no Valkyries swoop down to take her to Valhalla. There goes a missed opportunity to introduce that character, so don't expect her to show up in Neflix's Defenders show, and of course Dr. Strange is going to need some alien technology to explain his majick. 

Kurse's original helmet worn ,when the character first appears was more like his comic appearance, than the Predator he would turn into. The big showdown fights were all well done and the action paid off in a big way. 

So while a fun action jammed film, that offers a more balanced use to Earth and Asgard, it's more a problem of tone.Loki almost stole the show, and Sif was not as developed as it was claimed she would be. The little mocking blip of Captain America showing up, was funny and cool, The sneak peak into Guardians of the Galaxy with the Collector popping up was pretty cool, not sure if the Captain America end scene will link into that as well or set up Avengers 2. 

Overall as superhero movies go they are becoming overblown attempts to be bigger than the next, but anyone afraid how Thor 2 stacks up against the Avengers , well it holds its own and I would say it's better than any of the Iron-Man sequels.  Iron-man and Iron-man 3 are both better than the first Thor, sayings a lot considering how Thor is one of my favorite characters, alongside the Hulk and Dr. Strange .  Its worth seeing on the big screen and you will get  your  money's worth of spectacle out of it.   

Playing Catch up on June

Ok playing catch up from last week Marvel just dished out the worst comic book I have read in some time in Avengers vs X-men-# 5 -sure there are going to be spoilers but I'm saving you 5 minutes of your life that you will never get back after reading it. The books main problem is knowing this type of silliness is canon. Yep preserved in our mythology we have a whole team of Phoenix forced up X-men. Not only this but the strength of the arguments both teams had was a key selling point as neither was the antagonist, so now the X-men are clearly the bad guys . Of course from solicitations worse bad guys are showing up Mr. Sinister..who I have been underwhelmed by since his inception. Vs # 3 Thing vs the Jugger-Colossus, which went to Colossus , made sense to me and Majick vs Black Widow..which Majick won, though I question that a little but looks like they are turning the tide in X-men's favor for now and at the last minute Scarlet Witch is going to bring it all home for the avengers , this is my prediction just based on solicits X-men Legacy # 268 was three minutes i'm never getting back as it focused on Fury, the black girl not nick and was an origins story of sorts can Ms Marvel kill this bitch next issue? X-men-# 30 - Marvels striking out all over the place, the art in this book is fine and good , the story over all is too X-files bores me X-force # 26 - Omega red is back and who cares, his feeling are hurt and the book just didn't grab me the presentation of the story in general felt disjointed Dark Avengers # 115 - I liked the story, but hated the art, Skaar will keep me reading it but the art is really doing his character a dis-service and making him looking like Solomon Grundy from the batman animated series. Oh yes and by the way I found the 6" Skaar figure and will be buying it the day I get my hands on that once forgotten thing called money. This line up of the Dark Avengers is far from my favorite...if I was going to write a Dark Avengers team that was non-Osborne related I would use...Moonstone, Crimson Dynamo, Skaar, Wonder-man, Sentry, and Enchantress Thor Annual 1- well... what else do you expect from this type of thing, why is Sliver Surfer even in the story, this would have made for a good Beta Ray Bill appearance and you can take Wonder-man out of my Dark Avengers and replace him with Beta Ray Bill, it would have to work like when Sentry was originally in the Dark Avengers and he is manipulated onto the team or make it 7 members works too. Hulk # 53...mmm like the art seems like with the Alpha Flight in on this things are going to get a little cluttered but we got a Sasquatch vs Red Hulk fight so thats fine by me not sure about the Mayan arc... the sept sollictations do not have this title listed so cancellation ? Incredible Hulk # 9 ... was o.k, not really wowed , lacked iconic moments and this story seems to be lets just throw Hulk in these different environments randomly rather than focusing on a story almost like a monster of the week thing Supernatural gets into and it creates a rut on that show so this is no exception.The art is better but almost too cartoony, this the guy who did those boring Thor post siege comics. Fantastic Four #607 - another boring book and I'm combining two weeks worth of books so not a good sign on pacing and direction from the company in general. Actions Comics and Justice League International #10 were both , messes of a script though in all fairness Action Comics did better with the scen of Super-man taking a leave of abscene from the Justice league. Marvel redemption comes in Avengers #27- It's classic 80's feeling writing while it's a line up of Thor, Beast, Ms. Marvel,Vision and War Machine , I say throw in Scarlet Witch or Wasp and this team is a keeper. if you are going to get away with not really doing a avngers vs x-men tie in then give me a story like this and it works Scarlet Spider # 7, meh, feels off track and not different enough from spider-man to be intresting even bringing in Kraven D/C Green Lantern # 10... too bad the movie sucked because this book was a lot of fun, the art was great and the stroy moved avoiding the murk of space operas it tends to sink into Batman # 10...a boring chase of sorts that was filler til the cliff hanging tease to a fight , batm-man's brother really ...like sands in the hourglass these are the days of our lives. Bat man & Robin #10- o.k you want character development, what could have been filler to bridge over into the story still kicked ass and kept it intresting while still working a fight into the mix , because what are super-heroes if not for the fighting but guys in tights ... Batgirl #10- the art is strong , the story was fun even though it's nota book i normally read it was an easy connec the dots.

Avengers- the review

o.k the spoilers ...for the one we need to discuss will be at the bottom here but lets get into the review first
Joss Whedon can do no wrong in my book so i resigned myself to the fact he was dealing with the line-up Marvel dealt him, and even though the Hulk is my favorite superhero ever ...yes even over Thor, I would have traded him for Vision and Scarlet Witch,  or if they wanted to do the first line-up he was in for a couple of issues then Wasp and Ant-man should have been included ,...but getting past that The Hulk held all of the films finest moments. Ruffalo  was grudgingly the best Banner yet. The Hulk was acknowledge in his rightful power set. Though the audience where I saw the film was cheering for Thor during their  fight, Hulk won the over by the end. Strangely or maybe just to me the audience was cheering for Iron- man when he fought Thor and Iron-man and Capt. America seemed to be the crowd favorites.
While Whedon who is used to ensemble casts gave every one equal spotlight , the shine seemed to be more focused on Stark and Rogers. He kept the sense of urgency through out the film so the Avengers could never get to comfortable. The big climatic battle at the end was well laid out with the heroes overlapping and preforming panel framed action sequences just like it's drawn every week.  The dialogue was clever and makes you wish Whedon was back writing for marvel, but with a hit like this he will finally claim his rightful place as the genius he is in Hollywood.
To break down the characters i thought ...
Capt, America ...was well handled and played though his shield would never repel Thor like that .
Iron- man- picked up where the other movies left off, the dynamic between Stark and Banner was great. Never really felt his connection to Hawkeye
Black Widow... a little too tortured , would think she had already been hardened past that
Thor...mmm power set was played down a little , he normally dusts Iron-man in 30 secs, never felt his connection to the individuals was confirmed, how did he feel about Widow or Hawkeye? even Steve? Had the feeling he was the character Joss was the most uncomfortable handling
Hawkeye...well in the comics he started off as a bad guy so that part made sense, though it left him blank at the beginning and he never fleshed out from there
Fury... well this is the jive turkey ultimates version, so he feels just like a character made for the movies and not the real nick fury to me
Loki- well played, though i assume Thor was holding back because they are brothers
Hulk...stole the show both as Banner and the green machine , sometimes looked more like shrek than others the best fully realized version ,didn't know Joss was such a fan or that Ruffalo was that great of an actor , he really knocked it out of the park and then some. Just read he has been signed up for 6 more Marvel films...could at least two of these be solo films ?  it felt great to be a Hulk fan.
 Expected a few more easter eggs referencing other members to come like Pym and disappointed by the lack of Whedonverse actors who normally make an appearance, I  as they will undoubtedly ask Whedon to do a sequel he should bring every one in from Marsters to Felcia Day ...how awesome of a Scarlet Witch could she be?  Marsters as Vision thats another post

Why did marvel flat out lie saying no Thanos ? he would not be my first choice as a villain for the sequel but was cool none the less and we have seen the infinity gauntlet

How awesome was the punch Hulk gave Thor in the final fight or the mopping the floor with Loki...too awesome ok it could get an a for those alone

comics 4/11

New Avengers 24...Well drawn, though the red-Hulk could have been bigger, the focus is on Luke Cage and Jessica Jones and looks as if New Avengers is focusing on Cage's view point of the X-men vs Avengers throw down. This is a tie but appears it is going the same way as the Siege series did, no real fights at this point , in fact it doesn't give you any more than the first issue of AvsX did.

Thor 12.1..while the art was staggeringly well done , the story was one of those remember when ...? that didn't move the canon story further felt like they were stalling, I hope they keep this artist on board.

Avengers Assemble 2.. pretty heavy handed tie in to the movie as once again the second issue leaves me wondering how this ties into the Hulk's continuity. The art is good and the book is fun so thinking of it in the same way i think of the cartoon and try to not ask to many adult questions.

Secret Avengers 25...not convinced about this line-up . The art well you know how I feel about this pencil scribble scrabble. The super adaptoid story could still be lingering as we see at the end as the next issue ties into AvsX.

Scarlet Spider-Man 4 ...not sure what the point of this book is aside from the fact Ben is a compassionate as the punisher, so is this for those who want a book where a spider-man really

cuts loose? , the art was pretty good and it was fun.

Wolverine 304..was it a dream , did that really happen in cannon, all his enemies ...well lots of them in one place and he can waltz in a do that , little suspension of disbelief please. the art wasn't suited for the character for sure.

now onto D/C

Deathstroke 8.. felt like the weakest of the series so far, the art even felt a little slack, the story typical family bs.

Speaking of family bs it continues in Bat-man and Robin 8, the father son talk is like an aside on Dexter , the art is good but overall issue is boring.

Deadpool 53...or something, this book has been run into the ground by a bunch of moronic nonsense, the writing just pulls everything out of it's ass, we get that Wade has a death wish, it is hinted next issue is the last one, remember when he was like Wolverine and had 4 different books , proff Marvel can wear out a character's welcome and I'm still think the depiction of him in the Wolverine movie didn't help things.

It's a weird week in comics when Green Lantern is the best book going, the art was great and the story fun despite how convoluted this space opera can get and the whole mythology tends to stumble itself into knots but I got the gist right away and kept up, they need to keep this up.

This week so far

ok lets start with one I have been anticipating Avenger's 24, while i'm not as big of a fan of the newest dark avengers , this arch is well written and Vision is back. So Norman Osborn, gets turned into the Super Adaptoid, the Avengers having fought one of those know what to do, seems like that was handled a little abruptly and leaves new avengers hanging as far as continuity, maybe poor release scheduling. Think the art work on this book could be improved, this went pretty cartoon as far as resolution as well might as well have had Dr Claw laughing.

Incredible Hulk 6 - So six issues on this , i think some of the gamma animals could have been left out earlier on and we could have gotten to these meat and potatoes sooner, I do find it a little hard to believe after his last run in with a gamma bomb Banner would have safe guards in place so he didn't have another accident... the art is a little suspect, I don't like how they are drawing Hulk's face but I liked the Banner vs Hulk fight

You know Marvel is cashing in on the movie how can they not it's their number one promotional vehicle ...but where is this in continuity? I can see where it's picking up from Avengers 24, Unless it's a massive spoiler for Incredible Hulk number 7, why is there a stupid Hulk ? Seems like mental capacity is a key component in continuity. Other wise I like the art and the story aside from the dumb Hulk is entertaining.

X-23- while a really unique and interesting issue about a character who could have easily turned into a girl wolverine knock-off ...powers aside no she's not. we have a silent ..no dialogue vision-quest. I Know the series is coming to a close and she will be on a team book , prolly a better place for her so marvel doesn't fall into the trap of a whole section of Wolverine clan books like Bat-man is in.

Fantastic Four I have mixed feelings about as it defines jumping the shark in comics and is a mess of cosmic proportions, we have multiple Reed Richards and family members waltzing in and out of alternate time lines..The redeeming elements comes from the very human emotional element, its the touch stone of Marvel writing and what has always made me feel more connected to the characters than DC...sometimes Super-man captures this Bat-man feels blank, as does Wonder-woman and Aqua-man. When Franklin flies it felt real, a well drawn panel , the art in this book is a mess , get the suspense of disbelief together even on the space epics and there is powerful potential in the family dynamic as displayed here.

Speaking of Dc ..Super-boy 7 was the perfect blend of action and story , since he is a clone you don't have to worry about pesky little things like emotions and the art is fantastic, I like this book a little more with every read. The key hear is it doesn't feel like he is another member of the Krypton clan.

Deathstroke is where thins start getting gritty for the week, the kind of violence I was surprised to find in a DC comic, ok maybe not on the level or the Sentry ripping Ares in half , but swords through heads, the book is fun and despite the father son cliche arc it was satisfying all the way around and this is from a character I know next to nothing about

Up next Kick Ass 2 issue 7- or i think, I'm out of the loop on this one but the pieces were easy to put into place though I am sory to hear that I missed the Red Mist's big rape, will have to go back and find that one. It seems the empathy for these kids has gone down the drain and Hit-girl is chopping heads off , so they are trying to go for the shocks which I think were more effective when you had a little more invested in the characters ...I'm sure it is selling though.

Another Week in Comics

Ok we are going to hit Marvel First, and lets start with Amazing Spider 681... this is the prelude to the ends of the earth arc with Dr Octopus, and closes the story of Torch and Spidey rescuing the Jamerson boy from a space station invested with Octo-bots, fun read, space adventures normally aren't my thing , save that for the Fantastic Four but for what it was entertaining, While we are are web-shooter how about Venom 14...
This arc wore thin for me ...which is a problem as the Red Hulk was in it, the art did not wow me at all, and the action seemed scatter brained. It leads into Venom's induction into the secret Avengers .
the segue into Avengers Academy...I like this book it has the feel of West Coast Avengers, another gay hero comes out though it seems mainly for publicity, gay is the new black in comics, how large of a demographic is gay readership? My guess is not very.Issue 27 here features a guest spot by the Runaways, I know it's supposed to be a big deal but they have stayed off my radar seemed like a cross between the Power Pack and the New Mutants, even though they left a decent first impression I'm not off base on that assessment.
X-men 26 raises the bar pretty high for a comic book to kick ass, the art and action are both perfect if i was giving stars on something like Comic Book Resources this one would get 5 of 5, this is how to write them kids just like the good ole days.
Wolverine 302 was a mixed bag and it was a stylistic choice with the varied art, and shift in reality perspective, Sabertooth, Mystique and Sliver Samurai all back no wonder it feels like i have read this book before
Now moving on to D/C and starting it off with a book I went from loving to hating Swamp Thing, I hate it because they have taken 7 issues to turn Alec Holland into the Swamp-Thing, ... he turns here but then you never really get the full reveal as they are being so artsy ... give him wings ...uh come on
Detective Comics 7 is a well done Bat-man book, all the way around , great artwork and the Penguin is not one of my favorite Bat-man villians but oh well they worked with the choices they made
Action Comics...by getting the suit back on, and out of his every-man attire I think the book is symbolically taking off, Brainiac makes an appearance will be interested in seeing the rest of Super-man's rogues gallery introduced

more smashing

Ok catching up now we have Thor issue 4 and Avengers 15 , it still baffles me how Thor isn't tied into Fear Itself , anyways the art work is stellar in this space battle , while there is much more action than we have seen in some of the dragging issues preceding this , the Thor vs Silver Surfer battle hasn't delivered the goods as it needs to here, i was also wondering where the hell is beta ray bill in all this seems like it would be up his alley, anyway Odin vs Galactus battle was more a mind game with night mare asides , the scene with Thor laying into galactus was pretty cool, from this and what i have seen of the impending Thor showing up to the battle field in fear it's self he is going to get a better display of his powers.
Avengers was like the bizzarro version of the dynamics of the book composition, as the artwork was awful reminding me of the Maxx from the nineties . We get even more of this dull telling not showing avengers interview , placed in at points where it made the story drag , now the fighting was an improvement , spider-woman vs a souped up serpent power Hulk, wasn't realistic, ms marvel represented herself well, this protector guy, whos a Kree, i assumed to be more captain marvell , came across like the video game character mega-man crossed with vision . Hawkeye was well played and seemed to be the only character who bendis nailed in tone . Fear itself , pales in comparison to Siege seems to lack forward momentum which is becoming a trade mark for the hit or miss fraction and bendis team the so called architects whos buildings seem to hold up as well as the ravaged city scape we see here, remember before this event how they said every punch count every loose brick counts ... uh remind me not to believe you as it like every metal band saying its going to be there heaviest album yet before they sell out

the Avengers now deep into fear itself, red hulk takes on thing who is amped up by the serpent, this story is going to be retread in the next issue of hulk, the avengers tower gets destroyed and red hulk puts up a pretty good fight against the now god like thing who can now fly and shoot blast of some untold form of energy which i am guessing never gets explained , i like the big fight , the avenger narrative section was good for one issue already it could have been left out
next up the 2nd part of the heart of a monster story - in incredible hulks, the art is great the story is silly , maybe pak should go write for dc , as it all action with magic and the silly wish fountain the only explanation the jumble, the giant versions of wendigo and bi beast, what's the point ?
next mighty thor 3- the best of the bunch , finally some pay off to these boring builds fraction was doing , thor vs surfer, very breif but a well thought of fight respecting every one's mythology, the best part of the book is the banter between volstagg and a Oklahoma preacher, where Volstagg tell hims Jesus is really nothing special the wholes resurrection thing has been done before , glad marvel had the balls to print that , we get a naked sif and the gods suiting up to throw down with galactus what more do you need, the art is most improved please keep this artist its what the book needs , look forward to the next issue
